Ground Your Existing Shelf System

by Mike Patino on 2006-11-05 15:45:01 - Email This

Many businesses started when technology was low scale. There was no need for ESD in your work place and it made no sense to spending the extra money when it was not required.

Many companies started with simple boltless shelving brands or standard steel shelving. Times have changed. Parts lists now include electronic componentry. Clients require their suppliers to be ESD compliant.

While ideally it would be great to start fresh with new wire shelving sitting on a grounded floor. That is not always pratical. There are budget constraints.

Try a few simple steps for initial compliance.

  1. Determine the closest common earth ground point. This will likely be a wall plug outlet.
  2. Static dissipative mat can be placed on each shelf surface that will hold static sensitive materials.
  3. A Ground Wire (copper wire) should be run from each mat to a sentral ground bolt on the shef unit.
  4. Run a Ground Wire from the shelving unit to your earth ground point.

When handling Static Sensitive Components or transferring them from shelf to cart the operator should also be properly grounded by wrist strap or other ground protection.

A heel grounder will work well if the operator is on a grounded surface such as a conductive floor mat.
